Expressive & Experiential
Expressive and experiential therapy draws on the arts — visual art, writing, movement, music, and drama — as pathways into healing that go beyond what words alone can reach.
Rooted in the belief that creativity is not separate from wellbeing but deeply connected to it, this approach invites you to access inner resources through making and doing rather than only through talking. When we move between art forms — from image to word, from word to movement — something opens. Layers of experience that have been difficult to access begin to surface, not through analysis, but through the act of creation itself.
This is sometimes called intermodal work, and it's at the heart of what makes expressive arts therapy distinct.
This might be a good fit if you:
Find it hard to access what you're feeling through words alone
Are drawn to creativity, art, or movement as a way of making sense of things
Want therapy that engages your whole self — not just your thinking mind
Feel stuck in talk therapy and are curious about a different entry point
Are processing grief, trauma, identity, or transition and want a more embodied approach
Some things can't be said. They have to be made, written, moved, or sung.
Experiential therapy
extends this further into the relational and embodied dimensions of what happens in the room. Drawing from Gestalt principles, experiential approaches work with what's alive and present in the moment of the session — not just what's remembered or reported. What you feel in your body right now, what emerges between you and your therapist, what shows up when you pick up a paintbrush or put pen to paper — all of it becomes material for healing.
"By moving from art form to art form, we release layers of inhibitions, bringing us to our center — our individual creative force."

Expressive & Experiential Therapy at Heart Stone
Our clinicians who work expressively bring genuine creativity, attunement, and a deep respect for each person's unique way of knowing. You don't need to be an artist. You just need to be willing to show up and see what emerges.
